I'm interested in making a traditional Christmas pudding but I've never seen suet available in the stores around here. Assuming I can't find any, what would be a good substitution?

Best Answer

For Christmas pudding, there really is no substitute. In some recipes it's possible to use finely grated, very hard, unsalted butter, or a vegetable shortening, but the results are just not the same.

What is a good substitute for suet?

Vegetarian suet has also become popular and is made from a vegetable oil instead. If you can't find suet then we have found that grated vegetable shortening (such as Trex, Crisco or Copha) is a good substitute.

Can I replace suet with butter in Christmas pudding?

I usually make the Christmas pudding recipe with suet, but wonder if I can substitute butter for suet at all? Thanks. Hello, Yes you can use grated butter if you prefer.

Can I use coconut oil instead of suet in Christmas pudding?

The aquafaba and coconut oil are absolutely the best replacements for the eggs and suet/butter that are usually used in Christmas pudding so I don't recommend subbing them for anything else. As long as you use refined rather than virgin coconut oil your pudding won't taste like coconut.

Can you use margarine instead of suet?

Suet is fat. You can make dumplings equally well by using your normal margarine, fat or even butter! Simply substitute the suet. This will work equally well for dumplings in stew, or even if you want to make a sweet dumpling.
