I recently purchased a cream based salad dressing and it is VERY sweet with an aftertaste, what can I add to make make it more savory and just make it taste better?

I love salad and my veggies are so sad with this dressing...

Frequently the savory notes in a cream based salad dressing would be from a pungent cheese of some sort, like bleu or Parmesan. You could also try cutting some of the cream with buttermilk to reduce sweetness. Beyond that, it will really depend on what the rest of your ingredients are. Adding garlic powder or onion powder could also help depending on what flavor you're going for.

How do you cut sweetness in salad dressing?

If your dressing is too sweetBalance it out with a pinch of salt or something savory such as capers, miso, soy sauce, or tahini.

How do you counteract bitterness in salad dressing?

CD Kitchen explains that subpar vinegars can create bitter, harsh vinaigrettes. Adding too much vinegar (or lemon juice) can also muck up the acid-to-oil ratio, creating a dressing that's simply too strong for the greens. If this happens, add a pinch of baking soda to quell the bitterness (via Wonder How-To).

How do you make salad dressing less greasy?

Salt is the best flavour enhancer for a salad. If the taste is too oily, add salt; it will help to eliminate the oily taste.

How do you dilute salad dressing?

Another way to counteract the acid is to dilute the dressing with a few drops of water. Oil and vinegar or lemon juice naturally want to be separate, but they make magic when they're emulsified in a salad dressing.

Answer 2

A mild vinegar such as white wine or cider vinegar will reduce the sweetness. To increase the savoury element you'll need to add something rich in umami - I suggest parmesan or a similar hard cheese. As Jolenealaska mentioned, you could also add anchovies - do both and you're on your way to a Caesar dressing.
