Freezing boiled octopus

Freezing boiled octopus - Octopus Boiled in Pot on Stove

I've bought a frozen fresh octopus. As most recipes suggest I'm planning to boil it, and then char it on the grill.

The problem is that it's pretty huge and we are only 2 people. Would it be ok if I was to freeze part of the boiled octopus to grill at a later time?

Best Answer

You can most certainly freeze some of it for cooking later. I have heard that this actually improves texture by tenderizing it. I'd suggest doing so in a freezer-safe bag with as much air removed as possible. Depending on portion size, lay it flat or in pieces that will be easy for you to portion later if you won't eat the rest at once. That will make it easier to use without having to partially re-thaw.

Can I freeze boiled octopus?

Freezing the octopus breaks the fibers which makes it tender. So if you buy octopus, make sure it has been frozen and if it has not, freeze it! Whether you buy it cooked or uncooked, the end result will be the same.

Can you store boiled octopus?

Let octopus cool in the cooking water. Drain, wrap in plastic or store in an airtight container, and refrigerate until chilled. (Chilling helps set the skin so it doesn't fall off later, so it's good to do even if you're planning to serve the octopus warm.) The octopus can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Can I freeze an octopus?

Even if you buy an octopus freshly caught, it is best to freeze it for a couple of days before eating it. The freezing process breaks down the fibers inside the octopus, making it more tender and easier to cook, and giving it the best texture.

How long does cooked octopus last in the freezer?

Properly stored, frozen octopus will maintain best quality for about 9 months in the freezer, although it will usually remain safe to eat after that.
