Clams frozen before purging

Clams frozen before purging - Iceberg Surrounded by Water

I got excited to find out my friends family vacation home is on a river where a ton of delicious clams live. TI caught a bunch of live clams, then hastily put the whole lot in a bag of water and threw that in the freezer while making dinner with my friends.

I didn't realize that freezing them would kill them and make it impossible to purge them.

Is the whole lot spoiled now? Is there still some way to eat them?

Best Answer

There’s no way to make a dead clam purge sand etc.

You can always try to cook a few and see how gritty they really are, then decide. You may be lucky and find that they have a good mouthfeel, or you may find out that your entire catch inedible and needs to be discarded.

Can you purge frozen clams?

Put clams in 2~3% salty water about 2 hours for purging. If you need longer preservation, you could freeze them, but remember to do purging before putting them in freezer. Clams will be no longer alive after freeze and unfreeze, and purging will become failed.

Can you eat clams that have been frozen?

Properly stored, frozen clams will maintain best quality for about 12 months in the freezer, although they will usually remain safe to eat after that.

Are clams alive after frozen?

Clams are still alive when you freeze them and when thawed come back to life. That is how they live under water in the winter. They will be as good frozen as if you bought them from the seafood store. You can tell, once thawed, if they bounce back like a freshly shucked clam.
