Use by date on cacao butter - Couple Taking a Selfie

I have just used cacao butter 6 yrs out of date to make raw chocolate adding honey and raw cocoa powder. I didn't realise until after I had made the chocolate how out of date it was. Is it OK to eat? The cacao butter looked fine. I had it in the fridge all that time in a sealed plastic container.

Best Answer

I wouldn't eat it if I were you. I don't think it is safe to eat if it is 6 years out of date. I recommend you to throw it and make another one with new ingredients.

Quick Answer about "Use by date on cacao butter"

Cocoa powder and cocoa butter don't really expire, either, but they could go stale & flavorless if improperly stored. Unfortunately, unless it smells really weird, the only way to tell if a chocolate is expired is to taste it (and spit it out, if needed).

How long is cocoa butter good for?

Solid at room temperature, cocoa butter has a low melting point and a super-long shelf life of around two to five years.

Does cacao have an expiration date?

Yes and No. Cocoa powder doesn't necessarily go bad, but it does lose its original flavor over time. Typically, cocoa powder has a shelf life of three years if unopened.

Can you eat expired cacao?

But as long as it's not moldy and it doesn't have an unpleasant odor (key indicators of anything being too old to eat), there's no reason to toss a jar of cocoa powder that's a year or two past its expiration date.

Should cocoa butter be refrigerated?

So instead of the fridge: Store it in a cool, dry place. When chocolate is kept at a consistent temperature below 70\xb0F (ideally between 65 and 68\xb0F), and at a humidity of less than 55%, the emulsion of cocoa solids and cocoa butter will stay stable for months.
