Too much onion flavor in dip

Too much onion flavor in dip - Top view closeup of ripe organic yellow peeled onion cut into rings and placed on white marble tabletop

I've just made a cream cheese, mushroom and onion spread and the onion flavor is way too strong. Is there any way I can reduce it by adding something?

Best Answer

It would be helpful if you would post a full recipe as that would eliminate fruitless suggestions. Two things come to mind:

  • If the onions are included raw, you should wrap the chopped onions in a towel and wring the 'juice' out.
  • Acid of some kind could help too, either exchange sour cream for the cream cheese or find a way to incorporate lemon/lime juice.

  • How do you fix too much flavored onion?

"Water, a quick pickle of cut onion in vinegar for a few minutes, or any kind of acid will also dissolve the enzymes and take the bite out of the onion," says Patel. And if you're really against using strong onions, stick to a milder variety such as white or Vidalia onions, shallots, or spring onions.

How do you mellow the taste of onions?

To mellow onions: To retain their crunch, soak your onions in water for at least 10 minutes. To soften them and bring out a bit of sweetness, sprinkle them with a generous amount of salt, making sure to coat each piece well. Rinse off the salt before adding your onions to salads or sandwiches.

How do you reduce the effects of onions?

To reduce tearing when cutting an onion, the National Onion Association recommends you "first chill the onions for 30 minutes. Then, cut off the top and peel the outer layers leaving the root end intact." It's the root end that has the highest concentration of the sulphuric compounds that cause your eyes to tear.

What do you do if you put too much onion in salsa?

Too much onion will overpower the rest of the ingredients - you want some bite from the onion, but don't over do it. If you over-process the onion, you get onion water, which doesn't taste that good. Make sure you chop the onion with one second pulses, and not by just running the processor!

    Answer 2

If the onions that were added were raw, this may sound weird, but try add a bit more onion that's been caramelized with extra sugar.

But I think Stranger's way of more cream cheese and mushroom is the safest.

    Answer 3

You can also try and quickly blanch the onions before adding them to the dip. Blanching onions will reduce their sharpness.
