Is this pumpkin with black growth safe to eat?

My wife cut open a pumpkin that she was intending to make a pie out of, but she found a blackish growth in the guts. As you can see from the image, the discoloration is localized to the "guts", but hasn't seemed to affect the flesh.

The best info I can find after some googling is that this might be black rot, but I couldn't find any info on whether it is dangerous to eat after removing the affected areas. Should we toss it, or can we still make pies out of it?
