Is my milk spoiled? [duplicate] - Cup of Coffee over a Wooden Table

How long does it take milk to spoil? I left a gallon of milk in the trunk of my car for about 15 hours. I forgot about it when I got home from shopping, I didn't remember until I woke up the next morning. It is October so the weather is not warm,I would say it was under 60 degrees all night. Is this milk still good? Or should I throw it out?

Best Answer

Yes. Milk spoils pretty quickly (sitting out for the usually considered "safe" time of 2 hours is not recommended with milk, due to it's considerable natural bacterial load), and ~45 degrees is really the maximum storage temperature you should consider (even then, the taste will go off. 40 is the recommended temp).

How do you know if milk is already spoiled?

Spoiled milk has a distinct sour odor, which is due to lactic acid produced by bacteria. Other signs of spoilage include a slightly yellow color and lumpy texture (15). Signs that your milk has spoiled and may not be safe to drink include a sour smell and taste, change in color, and lumpy texture.

Can milk be spoiled without tasting bad?

There are several other ways to detect spoiled milk besides tasting it. You can always smell it to check for an unpleasant, sour odor. Fresh milk will never have any sort of obnoxious smell. The texture of the milk is enough to gauge whether the milk is fresh or gone bad.

Why does my milk have white flakes in it?

This is the result of fermentation, where lactic acid bacteria ferment the lactose in the milk into lactic acid. So, milk naturally contains bacteria which turn it acid, and hence it curdles spontaneously. You see the beginning of this process.

Why is my milk chunky but not expired?

If the milk becomes lumpy or gooey after being heated, that's a sign that it's gone bad. Milk curdles because the high acidity in the soured milk causes proteins in the milk to bond together, creating lumps. It's normal for the milk to have a thin skin on top when heated. That doesn't necessarily mean the milk is bad.
