Is it possible to make onion Bhajis without a deep fryer? - Unrecognizable female cooks with bowl of flour standing at table with cutting board and various ingredients in kitchen while making dough

I love these things. Is it possible to cook them in e.g. a frying pan if I keep turning them around? Or maybe by just filling up my crockpot a little way with oil (enough to cover the Bhajis but not so much it will spill over or spit everywhere)? Is that safe?

Best Answer

Yes, you can cook them in about 1" of oil in a steep sided frying pan or wok. Just turn them reasonably frequently to ensure even cooking.

If you're dubious about using a lot of hot oil, you can use less by making your bhajis a flat, patty shape and shallow frying.

How do you deep fry hash browns without a deep fryer?

Spoon 4 portions of potato mixture around the edge of the pan and flatten slightly to form 8cm discs. Shallow-fry for 3 minutes or until golden underneath. Turn and shallow-fry for a further 2 minutes or until crisp. Use an egg lifter to transfer hash browns to prepared tray and place in preheated oven to keep warm.

Can you cook onion bhajis in the microwave?

First, microwave the bhajis for 5 seconds. Next, place the onion bhajis under a medium-hot grill for 4 to 5 minutes, turning once. Reheating the bhajis using the microwave and grill combination ensures a piping hot middle and crispy outside.

How do you make shallow fry?

The guiding principle is that it should be thick enough to cling to the onion, but not firm enough to form clumps of its own. Majumdar suggests letting the batter rest for an hour before use, much like a yorkshire pudding, presumably to allow the flours to absorb the moisture in the batter.
