I know that it should steam until the leaves pull off easily. But how long does that take?

Best Answer

I found steaming artichokes to require a very unpredictable about of time, and have fallen in love with the microwave method.

  1. Cut off the stem so it can sit flat
  2. Cut off a little of the top of the thistle.
  3. Pour about 1 tablespoon or a few milliliters of water into the middle.
  4. Wrap securely in plastic film
  5. Microwave on high for about 10 minutes. Test the base for softness with a toothpick. Use about two minutes extra if needed.
  6. When done, open the wrapping and carefully pour out any remaining water.

They can still be unpredictable, but at least the variation is a little less.

How long do artichokes take to steam?

Place the artichokes in the steaming liquid, bottom up. Cover and simmer for about 30 minutes. The artichokes are done when a knife is inserted into the base and there is no resistance. To eat, pull off a leaf and scrape the meat off the tender end with your front teeth.

How long does it take artichoke to cook?

Bring the water to a boil. Add the artichokes in a single layer; reduce water to a simmer, cover and cook until a leave can be easily pulled off, 20 to 35 minutes.

Is it better to steam or boil artichokes?

You can boil, grill, braise, or stuff and bake artichokes. But my favorite way to cook artichokes, and the easiest way to cook them, is to steam them. I find that boiling artichokes tends to water-log them, but steaming artichokes cooks them with just the right amount of moisture.

How do you tell when steamed artichokes are done?

You can tell when your artichoke is cooked by nimbly taking off a leaf. If it falls off easily, it's probably cooked. But, to be sure - cool it down and take a bite from the bottom of the leaf i.e. the part nearest the innards of artichoke.
