Its a butter bell / butter keeper. My parents have one. You put water in the bottom, butter in the bell under the top/lid and that forms an airtight seal allowing you to keep the butter at room temperature.

Here's one for sale showing both parts clearly.

What is a ceramic jar used for?

Kitchen Products Traditionally ceramic jars were used to store pickles like mango, lime and amla (gooseberry) etc. They are a part of the traditional kitchenware with a specific colouring and form. They have a cylindrical shaped jar with a curved neck. A lid with a knob sits inside the wide neck of the jar.

Why pickle is stored in ceramic jars?

Pickles contain oil and salt. If they are stored in earthen jars (without glazing), oil will ooze out of the pores and start leaking. In ceramic jars with glazing, oil will not leak so pickles are stored in ceramic jars.
