what are the small black things that fall from top ceiling of my grill? - From above of crop unrecognizable person demonstrating black bracelet with creative design while standing near grass with leaves in autumn in daylight

I have quite an old cooker, and when I put foil paper in I notice little black things fall onto the foil from the top of the grill (I think broiling in US) compartment. Even when I don't cook if I put something in and hit the ceiling/gas heating element I can see these little black things fall.

I'm concerned it might go onto food and I'll eat them without knowing. Do you know what these are likely to be? Is it a hazard, or maybe time to get a new grill?

This answer is in regard to an outdoor Weber grille. According to the Weber grille people the black peelings are carbonized grease that accumulate when cooking and are not harmful. They might not be tasty though so I recommend a quick wipe to loosen the particles before cooking. Again Weber suggests using aluminum foil to brush the top and I believe that is because aluminum is softer than steel and so won't scratch the surface. Happy grilling!

What is the black stuff on my grill?

Besides leftover grease or oil, the grates will be coated with a black, crusty residue. You will want to get rid of this as well. This remainder left over after cooking is mostly carbon, and it will also impart and unwanted flavor your food, not to mention the fact that it may also be carcinogenic.

Why is my grill peeling?

It's actually just grease and smoke deposits that have built up over time. Not to worry, they are nontoxic. However, these deposits may start to flake off or peel if they are not removed.

What is the top shelf on a grill for?

What Is the Warming Rack? The warming rack is a grate found on most medium- and large-sized grills that's used to either cook food at a lower temperature or keep food warm. It's typically located several inches above the grill's main cooking grate. As a result, food placed on the warming rack is exposed to less heat.

Why does my grill have holes?

Those are the vents! Both control the flow of air inside of the grill, which changes the heat level and direction. Quick-cooking foods should be cooked with the grill lid off!
