No lower heating element

I noticed that my GE oven does not have a lower heating element, after more than 5 years of use. Is that normal or a defect?
Best Answer
If it's like my GE oven, the lower element is actually underneath the bottom surface of the interior of the oven; it's not exposed like the broiler coil is on top. While nice, I suppose, it does add a couple minutes to preheating time.
Check your owner's manual to see if this is the case in your oven.

Why do some ovens not have a bottom element?
Hidden Bake: Many ranges have a Hidden Bake element. This design places the bake element under the floor of the oven were it is concealed under a non-removable porcelain enameled oven floor. This eliminates hard-to-reach areas that collect food and spills and makes the oven easier to clean.Do all ovens have a bottom heating element?
A conventional oven generally has two heating elements, one on top and one on the bottom. For most cooking (other than broiling), only the bottom element is used with the heat rising to the top.Can you bake with only the top element?
What you have is called a "broiler" -- it's intended for searing the top of a dish (steak, perhaps, or a cheese layer, or a topping), not for cooking food through. As you note, anything thicker than a pizza will burn on the top before the middle is cooked, and never mind the bottom.Do electric ovens have bottom element?
Remove the Bottom PanelThe hidden element is underneath the lower panel inside your oven compartment. Start by removing the oven racks, carefully setting them aside. If you have a friend, this is a good time to soak and clean your oven racks. Next, use a nut driver to remove the lower panel inside the oven.HEATING ELEMENTS EXPLAINED
