Measuring powdered sugar
I have some old recipes that call for a box of powdered sugar. How many cups would that equal ? I buy powdered sugar in two pound bags.
Best Answer
My best guess would be one pound, since it's still often sold in stores in 1lb boxes, regardless of brand:
You can see plenty more like that if you do a Google image search for [powdered sugar box].
As others have pointed out, measuring by volume is inaccurate (one pound could be 3.5 to 4.5 cups), so you'd be best off using a scale, or perhaps measuring your two pound bag into two equal volumes.
That said, if your recipe can tolerate being off by a couple ounces (around half a cup), you could use four cups for a one-pound box.

Quick Answer about "Measuring powdered sugar"
How do you measure powdered sugar?
Granulated and powdered sugar should be spooned into a dry measuring cup and leveled off with a straight edge. Test Kitchen Tip: Be sure to stir the sugar first to remove any clumps. If there are a lot of lumps in your powdered sugar, you can pass it through a sifter or sieve ($8, Walmart) before measuring.Do you sift powdered sugar before or after you measure it?
Powdered sugar should be sifted before measured or used. If you don't have a sifter, put the sugar in a fine sieve, place the sieve over a bowl or measuring cup, and gently tap the side. The equivalency is 1 3/4 cups packed powdered sugar to 1 cup granulated sugar. How do I measure 16 oz of powdered sugar?
Powdered sugar right out of the box or the plastic bag weighs 4 1/2 ounces per cup, so a 1-pound box (or 16 ounces) contains about 3 1/2 cups of powdered sugar. If a recipe calls for sifted powdered sugar, weigh out 4 ounces of sifted powdered sugar to equal 1 dry measuring cup.How do you measure powdered sugar from granulated flour?
WHITE GRANULATED SUGAR Unlike flour, sugar is measured by scooping the measuring cup or spoon into the container/bag until it is overflowing, then leveling it off with the back of a knife. Sugar is heavier than flour, so it's less likely to pack down into the measuring cup.How to Measure Powdered Sugar | Yummy Ph

According to King Arthur Flour's Master Weight Chart, 1 pound (the most likely size of a box in the US) of unsifted powdered sugar is about 4 cups. As I said in a comment above, I highly recommend weighing powdered sugar instead of measuring it by the cup.
Answer 3
Per Domino® Sugar,
The answer to how many cups are in one pound of powdered sugar will vary depending on if your powdered sugar is sifted or unsifted. In general:
1 pound = 3 1/2 to 4 cups unsifted powdered sugar
1 pound = 4 1/2 cups sifted powered sugar
Customarily sold in boxes in the US, as in the illustration provided by @Jefromi, they are one pound/16 ounces. For a 2-pound bag, either measure out 3 1/2 to 4 cups for the recipe or, more straightforward, half of the quantity in the bag.
