I was told to put my cast iron skillets in an open fire to clean. We did and now they have a red discoloration and look worse than before. How do I clean the red off and get them shiny again?

Best Answer

Have they simply rusted? Clean cast iron or steel without oil (having been burned off in the fire) will rust at the least provocation.

Steel wool and oil should clean that off (it also requires "elbow grease") - use whatever oil you intend to re-season them with.

Can you season a cast iron skillet over a fire?

Cleaning Your Cast Iron
  • Wash your preferably still warm pan in hot water with a sponge or stiff, non-metal brush to remove residue.
  • If the pan is particularly dirty, use salt mixed with oil or water to remove the grime with a kitchen towel.

  • How do you clean cast iron after using it over a fire?

Never Use Fire to clean Cast Iron. Don't throw it in a fire and leave it until the fire is out. Fire can damage or warp the skillet, cause burnt orange spots where the iron changes its compound, makes it unable to be seasoned or you could crack it if you place it in too cold. If that happens, you've ruined it.
