My gas stove manual warns not leave food in the oven while it's off either:

  • More than an hour before cooking, or
  • More than an hour after cooking

I can't seem to find the reason why, or to tell if my food has been ruined.

What exactly happens in this situation?

Can you leave the house with food in the oven?

RI Swamp Yankee has located a reference to the US Fire Administration which clearly recommends not leaving cooking appliances unattended when no one is home: Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

Can you leave cooked food out overnight in the oven?

According to the USDA, food that has been left out of the fridge for more than two hours should be thrown away. That's because between 40\xb0 F and 140\xb0 F (what the USDA calls the "Danger Zone"), bacteria grows incredibly fast and can make you sick.

Can food left in the oven cause a fire?

Sometimes food scraps or other items might be left in your oven, and they could catch fire. Forgetting something in the oven can also lead to burned food, lots of smoke and in some instances, a fire. If you are cooking something with a lot of fat and grease, it can splatter and cause a flame.
