Best Answer

Yes and No. Soda lime glass is not resistant enough to thermal shock to withstand quick changes in temperature, if you pour boiling liquid into cool soda lime glass it is likely to shatter. If hot glass is suddenly exposed to cold it is also likely to shatter. This means to use soda lime glass with hot liquids you need to gradually warm them close to the temperature if the liquid you are about to put in. Many big temperature changes is likely to weaken the glass, making it less resistant over time.

So can you? Yes, if you are cautious and cushion any large temperature changes, but it is not recommended.

Is soda-lime glass heat resistant?

Soda lime glass is susceptible to shock and does not handle extreme changes in heat. It's chemical composition is 69% silica (silicone dioxide), 15% soda (sodium oxide) and 9% lime (calcium oxide).

What is soda-lime glass best suited for?

Soda-lime glass is produced on a large scale and used for bottles, drinking glasses, and windows. Its light transmission properties, as well as low melting temperature, make it suitable for use as window glass. Its smooth and non-reactive surface makes it excellent as containers for food and drinks.

What temperature does soda-lime glass melt at?

The glass is readily formable into objects when it has a viscosity of 104 poises, typically reached at a temperature around 900 \xb0C. The glass is softened and undergoes steady deformation when viscosity is less than 108 poises, near 700 \xb0C.
