Beets have a fungus

Beets have a fungus - Brown Mushroom in Green Grass Field

I bought some beets at a farmers market today but now find out they have a fungus (brown spots on yellow leaves). I will not eat the greens but are the beet roots edible?

Best Answer

Yes, even if the leaves are somewhat infected, the roots will usually be fine.

Unless you find soft or moldy spots, the root should be good to eat. Note that the roots, as storage organs, are in most plants especially resistant.

When cooked veggies sit in the fridge for too long, they get moldy. If mold is present, they're done for. Off smell. It doesn't happen that often, but if the beets smell off, discard them.

Why do my beets have white spots?

Symptoms of Powdery Mildew on Beets An early sign of the disease, which is caused by a fungus that only grows on beet and chard plants, is the formation of small white spots on the undersides of older leaves. Eventually the white, powdery substance will spread to all areas of the leaf and to all leaves on the plant.

Why do my beets have warts?

It sounds like your beets are suffering from beet scab, which is caused by a lack of boron in your soil. Boron is what we call a trace element. It is required for a good beet crop but only in tiny amounts. One way to provide it is to carefully sprinkle a little Borax detergent onto the soil.
