What to put underneath a polycarbonate sous vide bath container? - Interior of light bathroom with toilet near bathtub with shower and curtain near counter with shelves with towels and containers and decorative objects near white tile

I am using a polycarbonate gastro container for sous vide cooking. The water is relatively hot and I prolonged heat can damage the counter on which it is sitting.

What would be a good and cheap pad to put underneath my sous vide container to protect the counter? I am looking for something cheap and easily obtained, ideally also non-slippery.

A trivet is what you want. Any store with cookery goods will probably have some. They run from about five to well over thirty dollars depending on quality, effectiveness, fanciness, and decorative appeal.

I prefer the solid ones with feet for really hot pots or continuous heating.

I often successfully use one or more folded tea or bath towels or even a wooden plank (6" x 6", e.g.).

Quick Answer about "What to put underneath a polycarbonate sous vide bath container?"

Cover your sous vide container. Any cover at all will help stop the evaporation and heat loss from the surface. It can be as simple as Saran Wrap/cling film, or aluminum foil for higher temperatures.

What do you put under sous vide?

If I'm using a pot, I put a silicon potholder or a trivet (like you'd use under a hot casserole dish on the table) under it. If I'm using a Cambro, I've built a sleeve out of that bubble wrap type insulation. You could even put two layers of it on the bottom if one doesn't seem like enough.

Should you cover sous vide container?

We always recommend covering your water bath when you're cooking sous vide. This helps the water heat faster, slows evaporation so you won't need to add water during long cooking projects, and prevents things from accidentally falling into the bath.

How do you make a sous vide container?

It's the ideal size of 12 quarts, has a sturdy polycarbonate lid, and a wave design, stainless steel rack for optimal water circulation around your sous vide bags. Finally, it's BPA-free, if that's a feature that's important to you.

Answer 2

There are some people that use an old newspaper for that, cheap and easy!

Answer 3

I find that towels are the best especially when folded. They provide insulation for the water bath as well. If you use a large bath/beach towel, you can fold it once or twice and actually use it to cover the walls and even the top of the container to cut heat loss as well as water evaporation (assuming your container has no cover). You can always put a trivet under the towel to prevent sliding).

Answer 4

I use a large ceramic (stoneware) plate under my rice cooker or slow cooker. So far, so good.
