What is the best method of storage for condiments? - 2 Women Surrounded by Boxes

I have read a fair few articles about storing condiments like Siracha, Ketchup, and BBQ Sause, but they all seem to contradict themselves; some say that storing them in a fridge is bad since it has preservatives and other says it is bad to store at room temperature.

So, just wondering if anyone has advice on storing condiments preferably with reasoning since I am confused about how I should be taking care of them. (Though any help is appreciated!)

To a certain extent, it depends on the condiment.

For things like oil or vinegar, where germs generally can't really survive anyway, there is no need for refrigeration. On the other hand, things like ketchup, mayonnaise, or any other emulsions (tahini for instance) should be kept in the fridge. It also depends on whether the pack is sealed or has come into contact with air already. For example, sealed packs of mayonnaise can be kept at room temperature, though an open jar must be refrigerated.

Aside from that, it's always a good idea to keep things in sealed containers, and away from direct sunlight.

Quick Answer about "What is the best method of storage for condiments?"

Most condiments are processed to be shelf stable. This means they can sit for long periods of time on shelves without spoiling. You can store most shelf-stable condiments safely at room temperature, even after you open them. Brands tell you to refrigerate their products because they stay fresh longer that way.

What is the best way to store sauces?

The fridge is the best place to store sauces. Store your leftover homemade sauce in the fridge and use within a couple of days or freeze. For leftover shop-bought sauces it's best to follow the storage guidance on the jar. If you have leftover sauce, seal the lid and store the jar in the fridge.

What is the best container for storage of sauces?

Store in a small jar or bowl covered with plastic in the refrigerator or even in a heavy-gauge zip-top bag. A smaller container means less exposure to air and less spoilage. Gently reheat sauces to be served warm over low heat.

Where should condiment packets be stored?

The top drawer in a cabinet is a great place to store frequently used condiments. By installing an angled drawer insert the cook is able to see the labels of their spices easily allowing them to grab the one they need. Drawer dividers and specialized containers fitted inside the drawer is also a great solution.
