Can you freeze whole pomegranates to save them? - Jars of dry pasta and noodles

I recently purchased a whole case of pomegranates, and it's getting hard to stand after doing 10 in a day, so can I safely freeze them whole to preserve the quality of the fruit?

Best Answer

You cannot freeze them whole; the large fruit pod will turn into a disgusting mush when you thaw it.

You can, however, freeze the pips quite well, and they are the part you eat anyway.

Yes, you can freeze pomegranates. You can actually freeze pomegranates whole, but as they take up quite a bit of space in the freezer if frozen whole, I recommend seeding the pomegranates before freezing.

How do you freeze a whole pomegranate?

Pomegranates can be frozen either whole or seeded. The easiest way to freeze them is to simply place whole fruits in a plastic freezer bag. Make sure you get as much air out of the bag as possible to prevent freezer burn. If you're not familiar with pomegranates, extracting their seeds seems daunting.

Yes, you can freeze either the whole pomegranate or the seeds. Freezing and thawing will soften the seeds, so they won't have the crunch of fresh seeds.

What happens when you freeze a pomegranate?

Thawed pomegranate seeds will be slightly less crisp and juicy than fresh ones, but the flavor and quality should not be affected by the freezing process. Thawed pomegranate seeds should be used within 3 days of thawing for best results.

How long can I keep pomegranate in freezer?

If you keep whole pomegranates in the refrigerator, the shelf life extends to two months. However, once you remove the pomegranate seeds from the fruit, they last about five to seven days with cold storage in the refrigerator. For long-term storage, freeze your pomegranate seeds for up to one year.
